Back injuries from handling patients are the greatest personal risk to healthcare workers. 38% of RNs and 42% of direct caregivers suffer injuries resulting from patient handling activities. About 12% of nurses leave the profession because of back injuries; while 47% of RNs and 30% of direct caregivers have considered leaving because of the physical demands.
No-Lift laws have been introduced in many states and more states will legislate for mechanical lifting this year. Even with the economy in a downslide mechanical lifting is a good investment because there is a human and financial payback.
Studies show up to 60% reduction in these injuries have resulted in a 51% reduction in workers’ compensation premiums due to lower risk; injury and reduced lost workdays. In one facility’s six-year study; staff turnover decreased from over 300% to zero.
